Going the Distance

By Steve Meiners

Recently two members of the Crest Team accomplished long distance challenges of note. Both Jeff Friday and Maurice Millan should be congratulated for their accomplishments.

Jeff Friday – Jeff and his wife participated in the 52nd annual Ragbrai Bike Event. This is a bike road rally across the state of Iowa. Jeff has been participating since 2007! This year their route took them 455 miles through the scenic countryside of Northern Iowa. They (along with their ‘chase team’) spent 7 days on the road. Most of the biking was done before noon. Up to 20,000 people participated … camping out along the way. Jeff is not about ready to retire. He’s already looking forward to next year. Bring on the headwinds and hills.

Maurice Millan – Maurice is a runner. He has not always been a runner but ‘credits’ Jared and Dan Stumpenhorst for drawing him into the world of long distance running. He has worked his way up to events like the Chicago Marathon. In August he completed his longest run yet – 50 miles. The Badger Trail Race started in Belleville, WI with the first leg of the event turning the corner at Orangeville, IL. The finish was back in Belleville. For Maurice this was a 9 hour 47 minute 55 second trip that placed him 10th overall and 1st in his age group. Maurice credits the support of his crew – wife, mother and friends … and the fact the event organizers provided “unlimited pizza and Spotted Cow Beer” at the finish line. Next year his goal is to tackle the 100 mile portion of this race!
