National EMS Week

Once again this year, National EMS ( Emergency Medical Services ) Week was held in May. National EMS Week has been celebrated since 1974 as a way to recognize and celebrate EMS practitioners – paramedics, EMTs and EMRs – and the important work they do in our nation’s communities.

EMR is short for Emergency Medical Responder. Formerly, the name of this position was First Responder.  EMRs arrive at the scene of an accident or injury and can perform possibly life-saving medical intervention with minimal equipment.  An EMR is required to have First Responder certification. This includes basic first aid skills, including CPR and AED use. This course usually takes around 55-65 hours to complete.

EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians) receive approximately double the hours of training as EMRs do. An EMT course generally takes 120 hours.  EMTs aren’t just qualified to provide first aid. They can also provide emergency medication. Their training in transport, assessment, and stabilization allows them to get a patient from the scene of the emergency to the hospital.

Both certifications require continuing education.   We provide at least 8 hours of continuing education to our Emergency Responders at Crest each year.

This year’s theme was EMS: Where Emergency Care Begins.

“Where Emergency Care Begins” reminds us of our Emergency Responder’s most important mission – to respond appropriately to any emergency and to possibly provide critical interventions that could save a life or reduce long-term disability.

And for that we would like to thank our Emergency Responders for their time and dedication to Crest and their co-workers.
